Workshop 04 / Curative Landscape

PROJECT: CURATIVE LANDSCAPE (Redbridge NHS)

 .

Location: King Georges Hospital, Barley Lane, Ilford, Essex, IG3 8YB http://www.bhrhospitals.nhs.uk/visitingus/kgh1.php

Client representative: Lisa Lomas

Facilitators: Juliet Sakyi-Ansah + Maria Evagora

  .

DESCRIPTION: fixings and finishing. Students need to ensure that they are realistic in what they can deliver so as to not leave things unfinished on site. Students will also need to commit to material provided and work within the economy of means at the start of the project, while being ambitious with design aspirations and turning the ‘economy of means’ from a perceived difficulty into an architectural merit.

INTRODUCTION AND TIMELINE:

The quad is to be redefined for people who are suffering the after effects of a stroke, who have physical or sensory impairment and will be able to use the open space to enjoy nature and improve their mobility. The task is to develop a project within a tight timeframe, present drawings and models to the client group and proceed with one or more built elements. Fabrication will be in the UEL workshops, but delivery, installation and maintenance must confirm with NHS requirements or the project will remain on paper.

Friday 21st September @  12 midday  Survey: Heather Ward, Newham General Hospital (tapes/pens/paper). Location: Glen Road, Plaistow, London E13 8SL Telephone: 020 7476 4000

> Saturday 22nd September Visit to site. Location: Redbridge. Draw up survey, visit to King Georges Hospital to assess access, site dimensions,  sunpath, ground conditions and client requirements

Monday 24th September @ 11am Workshop induction. Location: AVA

Thursday 27th September @ 9.30am   Consultation and presentation to the clients. Location: Redbridge

THE BRIEF:

The project scale and sites constraints require its ‘masterplan’ to be developed from the intimate moments of use such as sharing a drink, reading a paper and enjoying the sun, rather than abstract, plan based ideas from where most ‘masterplans’ are conceived. This will require you to be thinking at 1:1 about spatial qualities and the resolution of construction details from the outset. A strategic plan will then grow from this. The ambition is develop a sequence of events, with a variety of qualities that should bring both delight and utility to a real client and a sensitive user group with specific needs and requirements.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS: Materials and workspace will be onsite in the quad, deliveries are to be carefully co-ordinated with facilities staff for absolute safety – design and material decisions must be informed by how the material and construction takes place.

OUTCOMES: Drawing and models describing a spatial strategy that the client can refer to in continuing to coherently develop the site in the future. The realisation of one or more of these built interventions within the quad as part of the strategy.

KEY RISKS TO CONSIDER: The ‘ANNEX A’ risk assessment is a document that asks you, the team to collaborate in anticipating the activities you are about to engage in, and to develop a strategy to deliver a safe and effective outcome. This is not a chore – it is core – an architect who cannot establish a safe design is not an architect. Update the risk assessments online as a first draft via the blog and upload for review on the 26th September – as the design progresses, the risk assessment will be revised and uploaded as Revision A latest Friday 28th September.
